President: Ian Purvis

Ian Purvis began brewing in 1988 with kits, learning to make some great beer, but stopped in 1993 when imports became available! In 2014 he was prompted by his eldest son to take an all grain class with Ben Darcie at Gravel Bottom, restarting his passion for brewing. He joined PTB in 2017 and started competing the following year. He became an accomplished brewer in the organization, winning Brewer of the Year in 2019 and 2020. Most of his brewing fun has been done  collaborating with Kitzingen, Harmony, Founders, Grand Rapids, and Rockford Breweries. Ian served on the club’s 'steering committee', two years as Vice President, and was elected President in 2023. He has recently been re-elected to his post of President.

Outside of the brewing world, Ian was a mechanical engineer, spending 46 years with Baker Perkins Co. in England, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and then the USA, mostly in sales. He retired in 2017 and is now far too busy to work. He enjoys working on home projects, travelling with his wife Vivien, and recently started curling. He enjoys golfing as well,  volunteering with First Tee West Michigan. He is most proud of his three kids and enjoys spending all the time he can with his eight grandkids.

Vice President: Mies Martin

Mies is an accomplished brewer who has been a part of our organization for several years. His love of great beer and mead is apparent, as he organizes and maintains the monthly brewing competitions for the club. He portrays great attention to detail, and has a palette for great beer that helps other members learn how to improve their brews. Outside of the brewing world, Mies is a professor at Aquinas College, and also is the Assistant Director of Libraries for the college.

Secretary: Bill Smith

Bill Smith has been a member of Primetime since 2022, and started as the secretary in 2023. He has won many awards already as a member, including the Brewer of the Year in 2023, a gold medal at the Michigan Beer Cup in 2023 and 2024, the silver medal at the WM Brew Off in 2024, and the O’Connor’s Competition in 2023, among others. He loves to learn and this club is so willing to share knowledge and skills to help him improve.  He also enjoys helping new brewers learn how to improve their beer as well.  Even though he enjoys learning more about his beer, he enjoys the time together with group members, and appreciates the strong supportive community beyond the brew pots.
Outside the brewing umbrella, Bill likes to spend his time with family, and feels strongly about supporting teaching and learning. He is a long-life educator, working for 27 years as a teacher and administrator in Grand Rapids Public Schools.  He is now a professor at Grand Valley State University and recently took a position in the Graduate Teacher Certification program, working directly with future teachers. In the summer he enjoys visiting Lake MIchigan, spending as much time outside as possible with his family, visiting National Parks, historical locations, and Breweries whenever possible.

Treasurer: Greg Sanial

Greg Sanial has been homebrewing for over 30 years. He is a BJCP Certified Beer Judge, a Master Homebrew Program (MHP) Grand Master I Brewer, and has earned multiple medals since started competing in 2021. He joined Primetime in 2018 when he moved to Grand Rapids, and became Treasurer in 2019.
Greg has a daughter who is an avid dancer, and he loves being her biggest fan. He is often seen at recitals and rehearsals, being a big part of the dance life. On his down time, he enjoys hiking, biking, and cooking. He became the Vice President of Finance & Administration/Chief Financial Officer at Grand Valley State University after a long career in the Coast Guard.
He loves being a part of Primetime Brewers because it is a great group of people who are passionate about beer. He likes the challenge of brewing different styles for our monthly competitions that he might not normally brew otherwise.

President Emeritus: Jeremy Gavin

Brewer, Jurist, Personality.

Primetime Brewers welcomed Jeremy Gavin into the fold decades ago.  He served as Vice President, President, and now enjoys his victory laps as President Emeritus. He hopes to someday be a nobody again.  Content to enjoy adding years to his legacy as a decorated libation creation enthusiast.

He is also a practitioner of the dark art of the law.  Gerald Gavin specifically works with alcohol related businesses. Advising creatives how not to ruin their businesses, and wrangling bureaucrats are his day to day.  Not all heroes wear capes.

Completing the triad is Dick Thunder. DT is a personality unavoidably spotted at beer events promoting the craft culture of conviviality and collaboration. Love him or hate him, he leaves an impression.
